Income Tax Returns FY25: Record-setting 9.19 crore ITRs filed till March 31

The Income Tax department set a new record last month with more than 9.19 crore people filing their returns for FY25 by the end of March.
Data shared on the income tax portal indicates that the total number of e-verified returns stood at 8.64 crore during this time with Rs 4,35,008 crore issued in refunds. This included around 4.19 crore people with income less than Rs 5 lakh as well as a whopping 3.24 lakh individuals who filed returns for income over Rs 1 crore. There were 3.4 crore taxpayers who reported earnings between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh while 1.34 crore people declared income between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 50 lakh.
The Income Tax Department has also indicated that the number of taxpayers has grown exponentially over the past few years — rising from 7.78 crore returns in FY2023 to 8.52 crore returns filed in FY2024. Maharashtra led the latest list with 1.39 crore people filing their taxes for FY25 while Delhi followed with 44.66 lakh ITR filers.
Reports citing experts attributed the increase to growing income levels and technological advances that have made filing tax returns a relatively simple process.
Income above Rs 1 crore
According to the Income Tax department, 3.24 lakh individuals have so far reported earnings over Rs 1 crore in FY25. This includes 2.97 lakh people who filed tax returns for income up to Rs 5 crore. There were 16,797 people who filed taxes for earnings between Rs 5 crore and Rs 10 crore. Another 10,184 people had reported an income higher than Rs 10 crore for FY25.
