NFRA, under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, is the country’s independent watchdog for auditing and accounting standards.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has named Nitin Gupta, a retired IRS officer and former Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman, as the new chairperson of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA), according to an official order dated July 16.
Gupta, who led the CBDT until June 2024, is credited with strengthening tax enforcement and improving direct tax collections through digitisation and data-driven assessments.
He will serve a term of three years or until he turns 65, whichever is earlier.
The government also appointed retired bureaucrats Smita Jhingran, P. Daniel, and Sushil Kumar as full-time members of NFRA.
Jhingran, also a former IRS officer, previously served in the tax administration. Daniel, a former secretary in the Central Vigilance Commission, and Jaiswal, ex-Director General of Audit (Central Receipt), complete the new leadership team at the regulator.
